From the business standpoint, it was identified that the site was not performing as well as it was projected. We were provided the following things to keep in mind:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demographics<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fixed income for older adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoppers wanted easy access to coupon codes and discounts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoppers want a fast and efficient shopping experience<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constraints<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must have prominent ad space on the homepage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must accommodate for SEO<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assumptions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoppers are unclear when they are going to another site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoppers are overwhelmed with the current sites visual appearance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, the goal was to improve these metrics:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click-through rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall conversion rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organic traffic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to gain as much insight as possible from the customers, I utilized several methods up my sleeve:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UserTesting.com<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The customers indicated that the site was loading slowly and at times just wanted to leave.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were overwhelmed with the vast amount of content available which made it hard on where to start.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Card sorting<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was able to run some sessions to gather enough data to confirm how the site was being navigated.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competitive analysis<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After researching our top 5 competitors, they generally had the same flow. The notable differences were the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some sites loaded faster the others<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different placements of their ads<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obvious different UI aesthetics for their branding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some emphasized the search bar more than others<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are SEO influences on the page layouts which I had our marketing director confirm<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brainstorming<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to digest all the data we\u2019ve accumulated, I\u2019ve facilitated several brainstorm sessions where we jotted everything on post-it notes and then we synthesized our findings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborative ideas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear messaging where it tells the shopper when they\u2019re about to leave the site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove unnecessary visual badges and tags<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer colors in the background so that shoppers can focus more on the product or deal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove extra special effects to lighten the weight on the code-side to allow the site to load faster<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simplify typography so that shoppers can easily digest the right content that they\u2019re looking for<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design Mockups<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I gathered all the ideas produced and started to create wireframe variations. Based on the list of elements that we needed to put into the pages, it all came down to layouts. It took a bit of fiddling to make sure marketing\u2019s, developer\u2019s, and product needs were met. Once the content and layouts were locked down in wireframe mode, I went ahead and created several design variations in high fidelity interactive prototypes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With several prototypes available, I used UserTesting.com again to run some usability tests for each. One of the designs came back with the best feedback in which had minimal change requests.
